Put on your thinking caps with these strategy games for the PC

Updated on 14-Feb-2020

A strategy game isn’t about faster reflexes or better hand-eye coordination, it’s about taking your time to outwit and outmanoeuvre your opponent. It’s about using the right combination of tactics and strategy to claim victory. There are a number of different types of strategy games available, so you are sure to find one that suits your preferred style of play. Here’s a look at some strategy games that are currently available on Amazon.

Civilization VI

The latest game in the long-running Civilization series offers the same addictive gameplay of its predecessors, but with improved mechanics and a bunch of new additions. This turn-based strategy game sees you take control of one of 18 civilizations. These include India, America, Egypt, China and more. Each has a leader who you interact with when you play against them. So India is led by Mahatma Gandhi, while Egypt is lead by Cleopatra. These leaders personify their respective civilization and decisions that you make, may anger or please them, which in turn dictates their attitude towards your civilization. Victory can be attained through war, culture, economy, and even politics.

XCOM 2

XCOM 2 is a turn-based tactics game that is set in an alternate reality where humans lost a war with aliens and are forced into a battle to save their species. You lead a group of resistance fighters into battle and you’re in charge of their actions. This would include moving your units to cover and taking shots at the enemy aliens. Once you’re done, the computer then controls the enemy units. The chances of you actually hitting an opponent is shown in percentages, so there is always a chance that you might miss and give the opponent the advantage. You also have to take into consideration terrain, elevation as well as the loadout of your squad if you wish to succeed and save the human race.

Cities: Skylines

Cities: Skylines is a city builder that sees the player start with a plot of land and a small amount of starting money. With this, it’s up to the player to build a thriving city by adding residential areas, roads, industrial and commercial zones. In order to ensure that their new residents are happy, they need to offer basic utilities like power, water, sewage and also supply them with jobs. Once their city starts growing, they will have to focus on other important areas such as education, fire safety, healthcare, etc. If you always felt that you could do a better job of running a city than your current elected leader, then you should give this game a try.

Stellaris

Stellaris is a real-time grand strategy game, which makes it more fast-paced as compared to a turn-based strategy title. The game is set in space and the players have to take control of a species that has just discovered faster than light spaceship technology. Unlike many other grand strategy games, Stellaris offers a level of customizability not seen in most grand strategy games. When players start the game, they have the option to either pick a pre-made empire or create a new species/empire by choosing traits, ethics and civics of it. These determine buffs, availability of technology and more. Players start with a single habitable colony and then have to expand the empire by finding and colonising new ones.
