PUBG Mobile vs Fortnite: Five major differences between the two Battle Royale games
HIGHLIGHTS

While both PUBG Mobile and Fortnite are battle royale games, they are quite different in many aspects like the gameplay, maps, weapons and more.

When it comes to battle royale games on mobile phones, PUBG Mobile and Fortnite are the two titles ruling the roost. While Fortnite was quite late to the mobile gaming scene, PUBG Mobile made a meteoric rise to popularity with over 10 million daily active users in March and around 20 million users by September this year. However, Fortnite wasn’t going to be left behind and with the debut of Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the game finally made its way on Android. It was later made available for other phones in October. We will take a look at the five major differences between the two competing titles and what sets them apart.

Maps on both the games

While PUBG has three maps to choose from, there’s only one map in Fortnite. However, this doesn’t mean that it gets boring playing the game since the developers keep introducing new changes to it every once in a while. The game devs keep adding new locations to their map that makes for interesting gameplay and forces users to change their tactic based on the terrain. The Fortnite Map is also rumoured to soon introduce snowy weather with the upcoming Season 7 of the game.

In PUBG, Erangel is the biggest of the three maps, while Miramar and Sanhok are medium and small sized maps that offer slightly more intense fights. PUBG also offers dynamic weather changes in the Sanhok map that switches between sunny, foggy, and rainy at random. There is also a night mode that is currently available in the Erangel map. Maps on PUBG are larger, which means that one will need to make a dash for the safe zone if they are too far away from it. It is relatively easier to travel in Fortnite.

Player abilities and interactive environment

Alongside being one of the best Battle Royale games out there, Fortnite also offers users the ability to construct elements. This means that players can pick up construction materials as the game progresses and make structures to shield them from attacks as the map gets smaller. Do note that all constructions can be destroyed in the game. There is no such provision in PUBG though and players will need to use their environment for taking cover and trying to eliminate the competition. This makes PUBG fights more intense as there is no backup to stay protected from other players. Additionally, you will find that the game progression is slower in PUBG during the final moments since players are more careful and are usually in hiding.

Gun mechanics

PUBG certainly takes the cake in this aspect since the gun mechanics of the game are more realistic. The recoil on different guns varies depending upon the attachments you have and the type of bullets used in the weapon. In Fortnite, the recoil is considerably lower for beginners and even when one levels up, the physics don’t kick in that hard.

There are also more guns to choose from in PUBG but Fortnite offers a fair amount of loadout to select from as well. One thing to note is the implementation of bullet physics in the two games as there is bullet drop in PUBG and one will need to carefully aim their shots depending on their gun’s capabilities. The same is not available in PUBG.

Graphics

In terms of graphics, we believe that Tencent has managed to be more flexible in PUBG. The game auto-selects a graphical setting based on the type of phone you have and one can also tweak graphics in settings to suit their needs. Fortnite is limited to some phones only and its minimum requirements are also quite high as one will need a device running on Android 8 Oreo or higher and with 3GB RAM or higher. This means that PUBG can run on less powerful phones too since it works on phones running on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop or above and on at least 2GB RAM. Additionally, PUBG feels more realistic with blood splatter on bullet impact, while Fortnite seems more like cell-shaded animation with more colour thrown in. It all boils down to personal preference though.

Crossplay

PUBG is available on PC, Xbox and mobile devices, and it will be soon made available on PS4. However, there is no support for crossplay yet and there’s no word on whether it will be implemented in the near future. Fortnite players have a great advantage in this case since there is crossplay support and a team can have players joining from PC, Xbox, PS or a mobile device.
