Nintendo shocked the world early this morning, by issuing a press release that tells of a new gaming platform to be released before the financial year ending March 2011, called the Nintendo 3DS. While it is a temporary name, the spirit behind it will not change, as Nintendo says the portable video game console will feature “3D effects” that can be enjoyed “without the need for any special glasses”.
As the technology for such a feat is not yet available, it can be safely assumed that Nintendo is sitting on a golden egg, one that will keep other portable gaming consoles even further away than its predecessor the Nintendo DS did, which sold more than 125 million units by the end of 2009. Further information about the new Nintendo 3DS will be revealed by the company at the E3 event this year, which starts June 15th in Los Angeles. The new Nintendo 3DS will also be backward compatible with the Nintendo DS and DSi, as heard on NeoGAF.
