This news arrives amidst Xbox’s efforts to compete with Sony’s dominant PS5, which has been outselling it significantly.
The Xbox console hasn’t been selling as well as Microsoft hoped, and they’re expecting sales to drop even more in 2024, reports Gizmochina.

Despite not sharing sales numbers for a while, Microsoft recently disclosed that the Xbox Series X and Series S have sold a total of 21 million units, roughly half of the PS5’s sales.

Nick Baker, an industry insider, said on The XboxEra Podcast that the design team change may be happening. If this pans out, it could lead to delays in the release of the next Xbox, especially if the team is starting from scratch with the design.
The decision to shift the project to the Surface team could be because of rumours circulating about a new handheld Xbox device. Given the Surface team’s reputation for crafting high-quality portable devices, it seems logical for Microsoft to entrust them with this potential project.
There has been mixed information regarding the rumoured handheld Xbox. Some sources suggest it will likely be more affordable and less powerful than the next-gen Xbox, while others claim it might boast comparable power but at a higher price point. Ultimately, only time will unveil what exactly are Microsoft’s plans.
In related news, Microsoft is gearing up to present its vision for the future of Xbox this week in a “business update event.” There is speculation that, in the event, Microsoft will likely disclose its intentions to extend the availability of Hi-Fi Rush and various other Xbox exclusive titles to PS5 and Nintendo Switch consoles.
