Lenovo to Unveil Legion Go S Handheld Gaming Console Powered by SteamOS at CES 2025
Lenovo is gearing up to make waves in the handheld gaming market with new handheld devices, including the highly anticipated Legion Go S model, set to debut at CES 2025. The company will reportedly announce multiple handhelds, and one of the models will run SteamOS, the Linux-based operating system that powers Valve’s Steam Deck.
According to The Verge, the images of Lenovo’s upcoming handheld consoles have leaked online, revealing key details about their design and functionality. The Legion Go S model, which will feature a button with the Steam logo, competes directly with the Steam Deck.
The Legion Go S is expected to be available in both black and white colour variants, with only the black model sporting the signature Steam button. This suggests that Lenovo is adopting a multi-OS approach, offering one model powered by SteamOS and a second model likely running Windows.
Popular tipster Evan Blass, has shared exclusive images of the new Legion Go S, hinting that it could become the first third-party SteamOS-powered handheld on the market. This would make it a true competitor to the Steam Deck, but the Legion Go S won’t be the only model Lenovo is unveiling.
Alongside the smaller Legion Go S, Lenovo is also rumoured to be working on a larger Legion Go, which continues the detachable gamepad design that was a hallmark of the original model launched earlier this year.
However, the updated larger model is expected to swap the current 8.8-inch IPS LCD screen for an OLED display, providing improved colour reproduction, deeper blacks, and potentially faster response times. While details on the specs remain under wraps, the new device may also feature an AMD Z2 Extreme chip, though this has yet to be confirmed.
The detachable gamepad design will remain a key feature, with updated controllers that appear to be more ergonomically designed than those on the original model. The revamped gamepads feature smoother edges and revised mouse buttons on the right controller, addressing previous concerns about comfort. Additionally, a protective cover over the charging rail could prevent the copper charging pins from poking into the user’s palm.
While the Legion Go S is expected to be the model that runs SteamOS, the larger Legion Go may stick with Windows, at least for now. The images of this larger model suggest that it does not feature the Steam button, implying that SteamOS will be exclusive to the smaller Legion Go S in this new lineup.
Earlier this year, Valve confirmed that it was working on expanding the availability of SteamOS to devices beyond the Steam Deck, with companies like ASUS ROG Ally also expected to feature the operating system in the future. Lenovo’s Legion Go S appears to be the latest device to join this growing list.
Will the Legion Go S be able to take on the Steam Deck? With CES 2025 just around the corner, all eyes will be on Lenovo as it reveals its new handheld gaming consoles.
