Niantic, the developer behind the game, isn’t new to making AR games. In fact, it's the one that made the popular AR game Pokemon Go. The core concept of both games is quite similar. So, if you have played Pokemon Go, you should be comfortable with some of the mechanics of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. However, the nuances of the game aren't as simple as flicking a ball to capture a Pokemon and there will be a learning curve to the game. It's needless to say that knowledge of the Harry Potter universe is key to understanding the creatures and elements you will tackle in the game.
The game is one that will get you out of the house to explore the real world through virtual eyes. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite combines content and characters from the original Harry Potter series and the Fantastic Beasts films. People will explore key landmark locations in the real world to find places and characters from the Harry Potter universe. The objective of the game is to help prevent "The Calamity" from being exposed to the secrets of the wizarding world.
The game will also expose players to key locations from the Harry Potter universe. Players will have to look out for “Portmanteaus”, which can be unlocked to reveal Portkeys that will teleport them to known fictional locations. One of the locations highlighted in the press release is Ollivander’s Wand Shop but we wouldn't be surprised to see Diagon Alley, Leaky Cauldron, the Three Broomsticks Inn and more.
