Harry Potter fans rejoice. The upcoming AR game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will release on June 21. The news of the release date comes from the Harry Potter: Wizards Unite official twitter account. Even though the tweet says “worldwide release,” it isn't clear whether the release is world wide as the tweet also reads, “Keep your eyes peeled and wand ready for more information as the game goes live in your region soon.” The game has been in Beta since May in Australia and New Zealand only.
The concept of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is quite similar to what Niantic offered with the Pokemon Go app. However, the nuances of the game aren't as simple as flicking a ball to capture a Pokemon and there will be a learning curve to the game. Needless to say that knowledge of the Harry Potter universe is key to understanding the creatures and elements you will tackle in the game.

Just like Pokemon Go, players need to install the game on their phone, launch the app, and get out of the house to explore the characteristics of the game in the real world, with the help of AR. While players search for and collect Pokemon in Pokemon Go, the objective is different for aspiring wizards and witches participating in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite combines content and characters from both the original Harry Potter series and the Fantastic Beasts films. Players will have to raise their wands, prepare potions, and help prevent "The Calamity" from exposing the secrets of the wizarding world.
According to the press release of the game, as players step outside (in the real world) and explore, the Map will reveal “Traces of magic”, highlighting key locations of magical “Foundables”. Certain real-world locations like parks, banks, municipal buildings, college campuses, libraries, monuments, zoos, art galleries, and more will have specific Foundables – very similar to the gyms we saw in Pokemon Go. Players will receive unique rewards for finding and returning these Foundables.
In the game, players will also be able to visit key locations. Since the muggle players can’t “Apparate” (vanish in one location and appear in another), they will have to use Portkeys to travel. Players will have to keep an eye out for “Portmanteaus”, which can be unlocked to reveal Portkeys that will teleport you to the iconic known locations like Ollivander’s Wand Shop.
The game looks like it will have a lot of fan service for fans of the franchise. Pottermania is about to begin once again.
