Hard-hitting story-centric games on the Xbox One

Updated on 12-Feb-2020

The one thing, that gamers look for, is a good story. Of course, if the gameplay is lazy and uninspired, then it truly does not matter. But a game only breaks through if it has a great story along with excellent gameplay. While it’s easy to opt for games that are cool to play, there are fewer games with stories that hit you right in the core (rather than just offering a format based on hitting you in the face). In fact, games with good stories carve a place for themselves in your heart forever and you’ll keep thinking about the journey you were on even after it’s over!. Games with a powerful story can also make you wonder about the real world, and whether your experiences in the game mirror those in reality. If you’re looking for hard-hitting story-centric games on the Xbox One, here are a few to check out.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition

The first on the list is Witcher 3, an action role-playing third-person game. The story revolves around a fantasy world that is surrounded by parallel worlds and other dimensions where humans, monsters, elves, dwarves and other creatures co-exist. The game tells the story of Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher and a monster hunter trained since childhood to fight and survive everything this twisted world has to offer. The story takes several twists and turns so make sure you pay attention and stay glued to your seat as you navigate your way through this mysterious world. The game is built for adventure seekers and the massive world it provides redefines the term size and depth. The complete edition offers all the previously released base games and additional DLC content.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

Ubisoft never fails to amaze when it comes to the storytelling they offer through their games. The Assassin’s Creed franchise is already well-known and is mainly popular for the excellent graphics, gameplay and mind-boggling stories. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey tells the story of a secret war that seems to be never-ending – the war that was fought between the city-states of Greece, Athens and Sparta. The game offers a story that revolves around restoring a fractured and broken family and its overall relatability makes you connect with the character really strongly. The narrative is beautifully threaded between war and family, and the game takes you on a roller coaster ride and compels you to stay connected with it at all times. Also, the extra downloadable content is essentially the icing on the cake.

Bioshock Collection

The Bioshock Collection includes Bioshock 1, 2 and Infinite, and offers a thrilling first-person shooter experience. Bioshock is set in 1960 where you guide the protagonist, Jack, after his plane crashes in the ocean near the bathysphere terminus that leads to the underwater city of Rapture. The city was intended to be isolated but the discovery of ADAM, a genetic material which is used to grant superhuman powers, throws the city into turmoil. Jack, while trying to figure a way out of the city, fights several enemies and even has a crisis of identity. The collection offers remastered versions of the games, which definitely add more fun to the storyline. A must-play if you are looking for something different.

Quantum Break

Quantum Break is a third-person, action-adventure video game. Jack Joyce, the main character gets superpowers after a failed time-machine experiment.

Players, through Jack, get powers to manipulate time. Time manipulation makes everyone wonder about the possibilities the real world can have and the game offers the opportunity to explore the same. The game follows the story of both the antagonist and protagonist, to give players a deeper connection with the storyline, making it easier for you to feel connected to the characters and what happens to them as the game progresses.
