Sony and its PlayStation3 platform is certainly going to see a lot of action this E3, with the Move, the 3D PS3, a whole lot of new games, and maybe even a Sony Ericsson branded gaming mobile. These are our hopes and predictions for Sony’s E3, 2010.
3D PS3
While Sony’s 3D PS3 was officially launched along with its incumbent games yesterday, we’re sure that a lot of Sony space on the expo’s floors will be dedicated to the 3D gaming experience, letting players get a hands-on before they decide to spend thousands of dollars on a new 3D TV. This is exactly where Sony’s strategy is puzzling, by expecting such transactions. However, we realise that Sony hasn’t really spent too much on developing the thing, apart from a firmware update, and it’s the game developers that will have the bear the biggest brunt of providing 120Hz stereoscopic content.
PlayStation Move
The PlayStation Move platform was debuted as a prototype last E3, then truly showed off at the Game Developers Conference, and ever since, has been much talked about. While they are not based on any superlatively new technology, in fact very similar in form and function to Nintendo’s Wii Remote and Nunchuk controls, the Move and Navigation controller will certainly provide PS3 gamers with an extra dimension to their gaming, in high-definition, which is something the Wii still can’t offer. Lag issues and accuracy will all hopefully have been worked, and a precise launch date will hopefully announced, along with playable demonstrations on supported games.
Sony Ericsson gaming mobile?
Where did the PSPGo go? The PSP never did too well against the DS, and now, with the 3DS launching, we’re sure that Sony is in a bit of a fix to provide a portable gaming console that actually sells well. Rumour mills have been circulating news of a Sony Ericsson branded gaming mobile, or a PSP phone for a while now, and it is certainly something to consider when one takes into account the predominance of the iPhone as a mobile gaming platform. Maybe this E3 SE will show its cards? We certainly hope so!
Premium PlayStation Network service
As if Sony didn’t already convey the impression of being pricey, it will announce its true plans for the Premium PlayStation Network this E3. While the current iteration will remain a free service, SCE Chairman, Kaz Hirai has indicated that a paid service will be available alongside. What will it offer? Well that’s what will be announced at E3, but you can expect such potential features as a XBLA type access to PSP Mini and PS1 games, premium exclusive in-game DLC, cross-game voice chat, and maybe even PlayStation store special offers and discounts.
Upcoming games
Sony’s PS3 has certainly got a huge bunch of games coming up, and announcements have already been made, ahead of the E3, of some very famous franchises getting sequels. Playable demonstrations of Killzone 3, Little Big Planet 2, and God of War: Ghost of Sparta, are certainly expected. Here’s a list of the most exciting upcoming, announced and unannounced games:
