If you thought that Counter-Strike had faded after the release of CS2, then re-valuate your thoughts. The last day of the Opening Stage of the PGL CS2 Major 2024 taking place in Copenhagen, had in store, CS action that would turn most critics of the game and its eSports scene right now, around, and in what way. Right from the first game, there was excitement, heartbreak, and every emotion that you can think of, invoked in not only the players, but also the fans. Six teams fighting for the last three spots in the Elimination stage. For me, it is a recipe for insane CS.
Follow along as we look into what happened on Day 4 of the Opening Day of the PGL CS2 Major –
The first game of the day was a faceoff between Legacy and TheMongolz. Both teams were carrying the hopes of their region’s fans, TheMongolz more so than Legacy. This is because TheMongolz were the only Asian team left with the hopes of making it to the Elimination stage of the tournament. And, they did not let their fans down. Led by Ayush ‘mzinho’ Batbold the Asian squad swept a 2-0 win, swiping Ancient and Anubis from right under Legacy’s nose, 13-9 and 13-6, making way into the Elimination stage of the PGL CS2 Major 2024.
With their win over Legacy, TheMongolz became the first Asian team in 8 years to make it into the top 16 teams at the Major. The last time it had happened was the Faceit Major in London. This is not the only reason for Asian fans to cheer, though. This win by TheMongolz means that Asia as a region will be getting 3 spots in the upcoming Shanghai Major. This means a lot to the Asian region’s players as there is some insane talent that has been waiting for a chance like this to open up, and in what way!? Top tier CS is coming back to Asia after a long time, and having more chances of having teams from the region taking part is just a dream come true.
Having had their dreams taken apart in the first game of the day, Brazilian fans had their hopes pinned on Imperial as they took on Gamer Legion. GL had replaced 9Pandas at the PGL CS Major, who had not been able to make it due to some logistical issues. And, they would have wanted to make the most of this opportunity, having progressed far into the last CS:GO Major.
After winning the first map, Overpass, 16-12 in over time, they looked set for a dance into the Elimination stage. However, Imperial had different plans. On Mirage and Nuke, they defeated Gamer Legion 13-6 and 13-5 to take the second last seat in the bus to the Elimination stage of the PGL CS2 Major 2024.
Brazilian smiles did not fade away as in the very next game, FURIA, led by the experienced Brazilian legend, Gabriel ‘FalleN’ Toledo ensured that they had a clean sweep over SAW. They beat the Portuguese team 13-7 in both the maps, Vertigo and Ancient and stamped their claim on the last spot in the Elimination stage of the PGL CS2 Major 2024.
Here’s what the points table looks like at the end of the Opening stage of the PGL Major 2024 taking place in Copenhagen –
After a long wait from the fans and the teams alike, Valve also finally dropped the PGL Copenhagen 2024: Stickers! Update. Without delving into a lot of details, I would like to say that the stickers look insane – clean and simple. Valve seems to have fixated on a clean design for stickers ever since the Stockholm Major, and I like it. For complete details of the event, head over to this page – LINK.
