CS2 Major: Cloud9, Heroic, Eternal Fire and SAW dominate day 1 of the Opening stage at PGL CS2 Major 2024
The first day of the Opening stage of the CS2 Major 2024 came to a close after some nail-biting encounters. 16 teams are battling it out against each other to secure a spot in the Elimination stage of the tournament. While Furia, The Mongolz, AMKAL, and KOI have one step on the flight out of Copenhagen, Eternal Fire, SAW, Cloud9, and Heroic have firmly placed one of their hands on the spots in the Elimination stage.
XANTARES helps Eternal Fire start their CS2 Major on a winning note!
The day started with TheMongolz taking on Eternal Fire and ECSTATIC facing off against Cloud9. Eternal Fire, banking on the experience of Ismailcan ‘XANTARES’ Dörtkardeş, docked their ship on the victory port. They did that with a 13-6 margin over the Mongolian squad, which had shown a decent run of form and technical prowess in the build-up to the CS2 Major. In the battle of NA vs EU CS, we had the NA team with an EU core, Cloud9, take the victory home. Abay ‘HObbit’ Khassenov, in the 2nd round, secured an ace, kicking things off in style. He carried this momentum through the game, getting 28 frags, including a quick 3-k in the 21st round of the match. ECSTATIC did put up a fight against C9, but was no match against a strong-willed C9. Cloud9’s current roster is an amalgamation of one of the two strongest CS teams from the EU in the recent past.
Apeks, who had a decent run of form in the last CS:GO Major in 2023, lost out against paiN gaming in their match, with paiN, getting a 13-8 lead over them, starting off their CS2 Major run on a good note. Heroic, playing their first Major after the departure of their core, to Team Liquid and Astralis, one-upped the Chinese hopefuls, Lynn Vision. It was Brazil vs Poland when ENCE took on Imperial. We know how passionate the Brazillian and Polish fans are when it comes to CS. That spirit for the game was reflected in the teams’ gameplay as well as we saw the first over time of the day as they battled it out on Anubis. A total of 32 rounds of CS were played, before Imperial was able to get an unassailable lead, getting their first win of the CS2 Major 2024. In the last set of matches in the first round of the Opening stage of the CS2 Major 2024, SAW walked all over KOI, winning their first game, 13-4.
Eternal Fire, SAW, Cloud9, and Heroic have two wins in the bag at the CS2 Major 2024
In the second round of matches, Eternal Fire continued their winning run, securing their second win by defeating paiN gaming, 13-2 in their face-off on Anubis. This was followed by ECSTATIC showing that they mean business, as they scored their first win, defeating TheMongolz who had to bite the dust twice in a single day. Heroic joined the “two-match victory train” started by Eternal Fire as they won against Imperial, 16-14. It was a close game, with one overtime, and was followed by another match where we saw the teams go into overtime. Apeks and AMKAL battled it out for 29 rounds before Apeks took the smile with them. Cloud9, also secured their second win, defeating Legacy, and we saw ENCE stage a comeback with their 16-12 win over KOI. In the last two encounters of the day, SAW and Lynn Vision won against Gamer Legion and FURIA.
As the first day of CS in the CS2 Major came to a close, there was a mix of emotions amongst the players and the fans. Debates sparked up regarding the feasibility of best-of-one matches, while others celebrated the return of professional Counter-Strike at the biggest stage. It was all smiles for Eternal Fire, SAW, Cloud9, and Heroic as they secured two wins each on the first day. And, for Furia, The Mongolz, AMKAL, and KOI, the deal is almost done. The fates of ENCE, Gamer Legion, Imperial, and ECSTATIC remain in a fix as they have one win each in the bag to start things off in the CS2 Major 2024.
How are things looking like?

So, let’s see if any of the four promising prospects are able to secure their spots in the Elimination stage or not, or will it be the underdogs, the one-win teams secure their second wins, getting close to the coveted Elimination stage spot in the first-ever CS2 Major.
