First smiles of the day on Day 3 of the Elimination stage of the PGL CS2 Major 2024 go to Cloud 9
The first game of the day saw Eternal Fire and Virtus.Pro competing for a spot in the playoffs. In the first two maps of the Best of Three (Bo3) series, Overpass and Vertigo, the two teams traded equal blows. On Overpass, Virtus.Pro were all smiles as they secured a 13-6 win, and on Vertigo, Eternal Fire smiled away to a 13-6 victory. It all came down to the decider map, Inferno. Thanks to an enigmatic display of CS2 gameplay by Engin ‘MAJ3R’ Küpeli, Eternal Fire danced home with their first spot in the playoffs of a Major! They won on Inferno, 13-7, and took the series win 2-1, joining MOUZ and Spirit in the playoffs of the PGL CS2 Major 2024.
When G2 took on ECSTATIC in the second game of the day, the odds were in favour of G2. The Bo3 series started with the two teams facing off on Inferno, G2’s map pick, right from the get-go, things were fairly clear. They romped to a win 13-7 and things look set in favour of G2 as they entered Vertigo. The first nine rounds the scoreline read 8-1 in favour of G2, and things look set for them for a 2-0 win. However, once ECSTATIC started their comeback, they did not stop, until they won 13-11. In the decider map, Anubis, G2, took home the win, 13-8. ECSTATIC were on their way home, and G2 held on to the hopes of making it into the playoffs of the PGL CS2 Major 2024.
Heartbreak for the hometown heroes, Heroic
Vitality and Complexity faced off in the third game of the day, and probably one of the most exciting ones. The first map itself, Inferno, went into double over time. It was a closely contested map that ended with a scoreline of 19-16 in favour of Vitality. Come the second map of the Bo3 series, Complexity bounced back, inning on Vertigo, 13-7. The decider map, Anubis, which would decide the fate of which team would be in the playoffs of the tournament, thanks to top-quality Counter-Strike by Shahar ‘flameZ’ Shushan, Vitality went on to win the map 13-10, securing their spot in the playoffs of the PGL CS2 Major 2024.
Heroic lost out to paiN when the two teams faced off in their Bo3 series. paiN, in a bid to hold on to their hopes of making it into the playoffs, gave it their all on both Nuke and Mirage, winning the maps 13-6 and 13-9, respectively. Heroic were knocked out of the tournament and paiN remained in contention for a spot in the playoffs. In the last game of the day, Cloud9 pipped NAVI to move into the playoffs.
