Bioshock developer Irrational Games shutting down
HIGHLIGHTS

The brainchild behind Bioshock, Kevin Levine, who has revealed his plans of shutting down his 17 year old studio Irrational Games, says that he will now focus on replayable narrative driven games available via digital distribution platforms.

Irrational Games, the studio behind Bioshock that bagged several awards last year, is shutting down. Kevin Levine, the studio head revealed his plans to move on to smaller narratives that will be released digitally.

“I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it,” said Levine. The closure of the 17 year old studio would also mean that Levine would be parting ways with “all but about 15 members of the Irrational team,” following completion of the last bit of downloadable content for BioShock Infinite.

“I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavour at Take-Two,” he adds, which will place more emphasis on replayable narrative-driven games that will only be released on digital platforms.

He also wrote, “To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience.”

So what’s next on Levine’s radar, “To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally,” said Levine.

With a shift in focus for the award winning game developer, the future of Bioshock series will be taken care of by Take-Two.

“I’m handing the reins of our creation, the BioShock universe, to 2K so our new venture can focus entirely on replayable narrative. If we’re lucky, we’ll build something half as memorable as BioShock,” Levine writes.
