Beware: Calendar bug in pre-Slim PlayStation 3 causing system errors
Discussion boards and Twitter network is rife with reports that pre-slim generation of PlayStation 3 consoles are refusing to gracefully enter the new financial year.
Official sources and the community are still unclear as to the exact nature and cause of the problem. However, reports indicate that the issue is triggered when the console’s internal clock switches from the last day of February to the first day of March. The bug is mostly affecting games and services that require a connection to the PlayStation Network. The theory so far is that between the console’s hardware clock, XMB clock and the time on the PSN servers; the three are unable to synchronize, and this is making some of the user’s data unreadable by the system. For instance, users are reporting that their trophy collection is showing up as corrupt data and downloaded games are getting locked. Users are also unable to play certain disc-based games such as Heavy Rain.
As of this moment, Sony is aware of the issue and their last official statement is a Twitter that reads: “We’re narrowing down the issue and continue to work to restore service to all. Updates as soon as we have them. [Sic]”. Your best course of action? Keeping your PS3 turned off until Sony figures out a solution.
