While most TVs available today may bring with them a host of smart capabilities, people are still using a TV that’s 3 to 5 years old and those TVs may not be so smart. To bridge the smart capabilities' gap, a user would have to purchase a device like the Mi TV Stick or a Fire TV Stick. Today we have with us a new entry in the smart streaming space – the Nokia Media Streamer. The Nokia media streamer can stream content in 1080p at 60Hz and unlike the Mi TV Stick or the Fire TV Stick, it has a slightly larger form factor, more in line with the Mi Box 4K (review).
"We are excited that Flipkart, the leading e-commerce company in the country, is bringing cutting-edge home entertainment to consumers in India with the Nokia Media Streamer, strengthening our strategic relationship. The Nokia Media Streamer is the perfect complement to Flipkart’s range of Nokia Smart TVs, offering Indian consumers a premium viewing experience to enjoy their favourite movies and TV shows,” said Mr Vipul Mehrotra, Vice President, Nokia Brand Partnerships.
Kicking things off with the design, the Nokia Media Streamer looks a lot like the Mi Box 4K. It has a compact square form factor. It can connect to the TV via HDMI and has an output of 1080p at 60Hz. It is accompanied by a compact remote control which houses dedicated hotkeys for Netflix and Zee5. It also comes with a dedicated button to bring up the Google Assistant.
The Nokia Media Streamer has a quad-core CPU, Mali 450 GPU and 1GB RAM along with 8GB storage for your apps. Since the device runs on the Android TV platform, you have access to the Google Play Store to download apps and also access to the Google Assistant. The device supports both 2.4 and 5GB Wi-Fi.
The Nokia Media Streamer is priced at Rs 3499 and will be available on Flipkart from August 28.
Because of the global pandemic this year, a lot of people have been staying at home and consuming content on their TVs to stay entertained. According to the press release shared by Flipkart, “As per DataLabs’ India’s OTT Market Landscape Report, the OTT user base in India has seen a rise of nearly 96 percent during the COVID-19 pandemic and the average time spent on viewing OTT content has increased by 30-60% since early March. Discerning consumers are seeking premium-quality content and smart solutions for their streaming needs, leading to further growth of this segment”.
This means a lot of people are looking to purchase a new TV or add smart capabilities to their existing ones.
