HIGHLIGHTS

This is not only big for Apple but it is also significant in hearing health technology.

To get the FDA’s approval, Apple conducted a clinical study that involved 118 participants.

After the study, the users who used this feature experienced similar to those who received professional fittings.

During its “Glowtime” event, Apple introduced a new hearing aid feature for its second-generation AirPods Pro. Now, the FDA, which is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorised the software that powers this groundbreaking functionality. Giving a nod to the feature on the AirPods Pro, the FDA described it as “the first over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid software device.” This is not only big for Apple but it is also significant in hearing health technology.

To get the FDA’s approval, Apple conducted a clinical study that involved 118 participants. They had been diagnosed with mild to moderate hearing loss. After the study, the results reflected that the users who used Apple’s Hearing Aid Feature (HAF) self-fitting strategy experienced similar results to those who received professional fittings of the same device. The FDA’s approval was granted under the De Novo classification. It is intended for “low- to moderate-risk devices that are novel and for which there is no prior legally marketed device.”

So indeed Apple’s solution does look promising and can help people get effective hearing assistance without the need for costly professional fittings.

A lot of hearing health features will come to the second-gen AirPods Pro this fall. This includes the ability to double as clinical-grade hearing aids. In addition to this, Apple is also introducing a Hearing Protection mode feature. This will automatically protect users’ ears in loud environments like in concerts. At the same time, it will also let users experience the “natural and vibrant” sound of live performances. This feature is enabled by default.

Further, Apple is also launching a Hearing Test for AirPods Pro owners. Users will be prompted to tap on their screens when they hear various tones, and the results will be displayed in the Apple Health app. Later, this personalised data will be used to create an audio profile personalise to the hearing aid functionality.
