Windows Phone Marketplace is rapidly catching up with other popular app stores such as Google Play store and iTunes. More than 100,000 applications have been added in Windows Phone Marketplace over the past 20 months since the platform’s launch. This means 313 apps per day!.
According to All About Windows Phone, over 26,000 applications were added in the last three months, while 9,391 were added in last month. The site claims the growth of Windows Phone Marketplace is faster than Android, which took 24 months to hit 100,000 mark. However, it is slower than iTunes, which crossed 100,000 mark within 16 months. Check out the comparison in the graph below:
Last August Microsoft’s store hit 30,000 apps, and by December it was more than 50,000. It’s notable that in just five month, from December till now, the figure has doubled!
Of 100,000 apps published on the store, not all of them are live right now. While many have already phased out, several others are in staging. Total number of live applications on Windows Phone Marketplace is 88,371.
It’s learnt that not all apps are available around the world. Right now, 60 nations have Windows Phone Marketplace and the availability of apps varies from place to place.
About 67 percent of apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace are free, 10 percent are paid with a free trial and 23 percent are paid content.
Entertainment is the single largest category on the Marketplace, with 18,867 items. Other three major categories are tools productivity (14,591), books reference (12,816 items) and games (12,212). The four biggest categories (out of seventeen) make up 59 percent of the content.
