Adding to its already extensive list of features, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a username feature for its web client to allow users to connect with each other without the need to exchange phone numbers. This upcoming feature likely aims to enhance user privacy and convenience, making online interactions smoother and more secure.
“Last year, we announced that WhatsApp was working on a feature to create a username from the web client. This feature will allow users to personalize their profiles and connect with others using a unique identifier. With this enhancement, users will be able to find and connect with their friends, family, and contacts without needing to share their phone numbers in the future, adding an extra layer of privacy and convenience. Although it is still in development, it appears that WhatsApp is now committed to further refining this feature before its official release by introducing a new redesigned interface, as discovered in the latest updates of WhatsApp Web,” WABetaInfo reported.

According to the report, this feature is expected to allow users to select a unique username, given that it hasn’t already been taken. Unlike platforms like Discord, where usernames often come with tags or discriminators, WhatsApp usernames will likely be completely unique. This means no more confusion or duplication, as each username would be one-of-a-kind.
During the setup process, users might need to check the availability of their desired username to secure their unique identifier. This is expected to enhance privacy by allowing users to connect without revealing their phone numbers. However, those who already have your phone number can still find you on WhatsApp, ensuring that existing contacts and trusted individuals can reach you as usual.
Once your username is set, only those who know your username or phone number might be able to contact you, adding an extra layer of control over who can start conversations with you and protecting your personal information.
The report added that while WhatsApp has been working on introducing this feature for some time, the feature is still in development at this stage. This means that details about its release date and availability remain uncertain.
