Uber’s food delivery service, UberEATS launched in Delhi-NCR
The UberEATS app is separate from the Uber app and the service is currently live in Gurugram
Uber has launched its food delivery service, UberEATS in Delhi-NCR, starting with Gurugram. The company has partnered with over 300 restaurants and claims to offer local restaurants a reliable delivery option. The service will be available seven days a week. It should be noted that UberEATS is a separate app, is available for download on the Play Store and iOS. There are also separate apps for delivery partners, and restaurant owners. The deliveries will be made exclusively on scooters for now.
The service was initially started in India in Mumbai, and the company says that it expanded quickly there. Uber says that the reason it chose Gurugram is because of its high density office and residential complexes. Expansion of the service to the rest of Delhi-NCR will depend on consumer behavior. It notes that Indians spend 36 percent of their household income on food, which is one of the highest in the world. The company also says that the market is still very nascent and has huge growth opportunities. The service was started in 2014, and the company claims to be active in 97 cities across 29 countries. It also says that it has partnered with over 45,000 restaurants worldwide, with an average delivery time of 35 minutes.
Bhavik Rathod, Head of UberEATS India, said “UberEATS has received an overwhelming response from Mumbaikars and we recently expanded operations to serve entire city. As a step further in our global expansion strategy, we aim to open up the diverse range of culinary experiences and cuisines to Delhiites at the push of a button. Our goal is to offer people what they want to eat, when they want to eat, in the quickest time possible. The ease and reliability of Uber’s technology is making this a reality.” When asked by Digit about ensuring safe deliveries given previous mishaps, and the fact that the city is regarded by many as being unsafe, Rathod said that safety is paramount and it has learned from its ride hailing service. So, customer numbers are not shared with delivery partners as is the same with the Uber ride service. Further, a 24×7 customer case is available and the service will be placing addtional safety measures in the future.
UberEATS works in a manner similar to other food delivery services like Swiggy or Zomato. The user has to input the delivery address on the app and then browse local restaurants or search by cuisine. The user then has the option to place their order immediately, or schedule their order or arrive at a time that is most convenient to them. Payment is made via Paytm and users can track the progress of their delivery. Further, the app will also provide analytics based on consumer feedback and order history. The UberEATS app also uses machine learning to learn user preferences over time and give offer recommendations based on what it has learned.
