Moments lets users stay updated about live events and the best of stories trending on Twitter from a single place, even if they do not follow certain accounts.
Twitter has launched a new feature called Moments for its web version, as well as iOS and Android apps. The aim of the feature is to help users stay updated about live events and the best of the stories that trend on Twitter from a single place, even if they do not follow certain accounts. Moments comprises tweets, images, videos, GIFs, and Vines related to a particular 'moment'. The feature is currently available only in USA, and will be made available in other regions over the coming months.
Moments is represented on Twitter by an additional tab with a lightning bolt icon. Tapping on the icon shows the top trending stories on Twitter for the day. One can also choose to browse moments of the day, in specific categories like news, sports, entertainment, fun, etc. While browsing any trend, Twitter also shows a progress bar at the bottom which shows how much of the moment is still left to browse. Particular tweets can be selected from the moment to favorite, retweet, and share with others. Once the whole moment is browsed, the entire event-scape can be shared with people within and outside of Twitter, by embedding the chain of 'moments'. If any 'moment' pertains to a live event like a tournament or a concert, there will be an option to 'follow' it. This option offers real-time updates about the event by sending tweets directly to personal Twitter feeds, even certain involved accounts are not followed. All tweets included in Moments are curated by the Twitter team, along with its various partners like BuzzFeed, Fox News, Getty Images, Bleacher Report, etc.
In an official blog post, Madhu Muthukumar, Product Manager, Moments said, “Every day, people share hundreds of millions of Tweets. Among them are things you can’t experience anywhere but on Twitter: conversations between world leaders and celebrities, citizens reporting events as they happen, cultural memes, live commentary on the night’s big game, and many more. We know finding these only-on-Twitter moments can be a challenge, especially if you haven’t followed certain accounts. But it doesn’t have to be.”
Last month, Twitter updated its iOS and Android app with various features, along with enabling Highlights for more than 35 languages. The Highlights feature was introduced first earlier this year, and shows top tweets to users based on their surfing interests, provided through push notifications.
