At the Lens Fest that is going on currently, Snapchat has announced that it is experimenting with around 10 AR developers and creators to build lenses which will have digital goods that can be purchased with Snap Tokens. A user will get the independence to unlock AR items, power ups and extra tools within some of the lenses using Snap Tokens.
Snap Tokens were introduced in 2020 and can be purchased from within the app itself under the “My Snap Tokens” section of your profile icon. To give a little hint of the costing, 80 tokens can be purchased for ₹75, 250 tokens for ₹220, 500 tokens for ₹440 and 1100 tokens for ₹890.
For the initial roll out three use cases were used for AR which are fashion, play and self expression. The company first sought three to five developers for each category and then a few of those were selected.
Should this experiment become successful, a snapchat user will be able to unlock digital goods within a lens using the tokens.
Sophia Dominguez, in an interview with TechCrunch said “We are using digital goods as new ways for creators and developers to build businesses beyond creating Lenses for brands and clients. This is the beginning and we would like to see how Snapchatters engage with it.”
These lenses will be rolled out in New Zealand and Australia over the coming few weeks. Eventually, they shall come to other parts of the world too.
This can prove to be a new way for Snapchat to make more revenue through these tokens. They have also hinted at how they are partnering with Adidas for a Bitmoji Fashion Drop that can be claimed only through these tokens. This announcement suggests how Snapchat sees the ‘token system’ as a way to generate more revenue.
