Snapchat is now finally available on the Windows ecosystem! The app is available on Microsoft Store and can be downloaded and used by those who have Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Snapchat for Windows is a Progressive Web App (PWA) that is based on the web version of Snapchat rolled out a few months ago. As far as the functionality goes, this app is identical to the web version. The app requires Microsoft’s Edge browser to run.
As this is basically a web app, it has a small install size of 1.4MB. The app will also constantly remain updated, which means that you do not have to manually update it as time goes on. Windows will be treating this app as a native app. This means that you can pin it to your start menu and receive notification alerts.
Snapchat had famously refused to create an offering for the Windows ecosystem. Now, the web app, which offers no special features when compared to other versions of the app, can be seen as an olive branch of sorts.
Snapchat also announced key new updates a few months ago. The app now has Parental Controls in the in-app Family Centre. These controls will let parents monitor who their children are speaking to, what kind of content is being shared, and even view the contacts messaged every week. This is a good step towards ensuring that children are safe on the app – far more than Instagram has ever done to ensure the same.
