HIGHLIGHTS

Snapchat adds new features ahead of the holiday season, adds smart filters, Replay and more.

Snapchat has rolled out an update to its iOS app that includes swipeable photo and smart filers that will display time and weather on your image. But the most interesting of all is the ‘Replay’ feature that lets you replay one image a day.

The Replay feature is very useful if you miss part of a friend’s message because you didn’t realise it had a video snap that included audio. The message will be deleted from Snapchat’s servers after the first play. Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel states, “You only get one a day, so you’ve got to use it where it counts.”

The update also brings smart filters that will overlay the current temperature on your image from the data supplied by the weather channel. Another feature will show how fast you are moving and will overlay the speed on your image.

SnapChat has added an option to change font on your text. Users can now specify how many friends they want to appear in their Best Friends menu. Apart from these users can now also enable a flash for the front camera for taking selfies. Users can access the new filters from the Settings menu, under Additional Services. The new version of Snapchat can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel stated in an interview about the new updates, “We just decided as a holiday present to the Snapchat community that we would put out a couple things we thought were fun.”

He added that “we’re basically in between big update cycles,” hinting at more updates coming soon.

According to a recent report teens are leaving Facebook for social networking sites like Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram. Social media expert Michael McQueen has described this as the ‘Levi’s effect’. He states teenagers are leaving the site as their parents and relatives are logging in and can easily spy on them.
