Pay more or watch ads: Netflix phases out its cheapest ad-free plan
HIGHLIGHTS

Netflix is reportedly planning to remove the cheapest ad-free tier for its existing users now.

It might be an attempt to push users into buying the slightly expensive plans.

Netflix had previously announced that it plans to phase out the basic subscription in the US, Canada, and UK.

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services out there. Most of people don’t even look at the other costly plans and use the cheapest version possible. But turns out, that won’t be the case for a long time now. Netflix is reportedly planning to remove the cheapest ad-free tier for its existing users now.

Well, this is yet to be confirmed by the streaming giant but it might be an attempt to push users into buying the slightly expensive plans. Reports suggest that this plan will be tested in the US and the UK first, and then it might be shifted to other countries as well. Various users took to Reddit to raise this concern.

Netflix removes cheapest plan

Many Reddit users shared that Netflix is asking users, who are using the basic plan, to switch to a new plan to maintain their subscription. One such user shared a screenshot of the notification that read, “Your last day to watch Netflix is July 13th. Choose a new plan to keep watching.”

So in the US, users who are paying $11.99 per month for the basic plan are being asked to choose between the $6.99 ad-supported tier, the $15.49 ad-free tier, or the $22.99 ad-free 4K premium plan.

Netflix removes cheapest plan

Netflix had previously announced that it plans to phase out the basic subscription in the US, Canada, and UK. The company had said that it would say goodbye to the basic plan in the second quarter of this year, starting with Canada and the UK.

If you check the pricing page for both Netflix UK and Canada, it now reads “Basic plan has been discontinued” and that subscribers “can change their plan at any time.”

Do you think Netflix will remove the basic plan for Indian users too? And if yes, would you like to switch?
