Over 17mln iOS and Android devices activated on Dec 25: Flurry Analytics
Christmas Day broke mobile activation records with over 17 million Android and iOS devices combined activated on that day, 2.5 times higher than Christmas last year.
According to Flurry Analytics, whopping over 17 million Android and iOS devices were activated on Christmas Day this year. The figures are about 2.5 times higher than Christmas last year, and a 332 percent surge over the December baseline average of 4 million activations per day.
Data released by Flurry Analytics further says smartphones were the majority of activations leading up to December 25, but on Christmas Day tablets gained the lead and grabbed 51 percent of all activations. Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD saw the highest single-day growth, rising several thousand percent compared to the December baseline.
App downloads as expected were affected by the massive surge in new activated devices, with Flurry reporting a 112 percent increase in downloads on Christmas compared to the previous 20 days. Overall, about 328 million iOS and Android apps were downloaded.
In the meanwhile, analytics firm Distimo split up app downloads by platform and noted Apple’s App Store saw a massive surge of 87 percent on Christmas Day, as compared to the December 2012 average.
“With a record number of iOS and Android devices flooding the market, we next look at the surge in app downloads. For these figures, Flurry estimates its percentage penetration per platform to estimate total market app downloads. The company also benchmarks download volumes tracked in its system against publicly released app download milestones from Apple and Google,” says Flurry Analytics on its blog.
