Nokia’s HERE mapping service has launched its pilot community mapping project in India. The project is aimed at providing improved navigation services by partnering up with local experts.
The regional team of HERE will work with students studying subjects like GIS and geography from universities, like SAL Institute of Technology in Ahmadabad and Mount Carmel College in Bangalore and allows them to add missing streets, bridges, points of interests (POIs) and other information to the map.
Cartography students will add relevant and useful edits to the map, and can also validate the community edits. The students will have access to HERE Map Creator, an exclusive community map editing tool. Map Creator will allow people to add streets, Points of Interest, bridges, and other significant information to the map. The edits will go through a moderation system and later integrated into HERE Maps.
HERE EVP Michael Halbherr stated, “India is a very important market for us. In a fast-growing country like India, a community mapping approach along with inputs from our own experts will help HERE keep pace with the ever-evolving landscape.”
HERE maps comes pre-loaded into many Nokia devices like the Asha and Lumia range. Nokia Here Maps allows you to search for places and addresses in more than 200 countries. The service has also tied up with many automobile companies, personal navigation device manufactures, mobile device makers, to develop and improve their traffic navigation system. The Nokia Here Maps service is now available for Windows Phone 8, mHTML5, Firefox OS and Android OS.
