Scammers are getting really creative with the ways to scam people, and it seems like they leave no stone unturned. A new scam has been flagged by cybersecurity firm Bitdefender which is targeting Netflix users to steal their personal and financial information. Scammers send fake messages claiming that a subscriber’s Netflix payment failed. As per reports, this scam is impacting subscribers in 23 countries, including the United States, Germany, India, Spain, and Australia.
What is the new Netflix scam?
It is a type of phishing scam and involves scammers sending fraudulent SMS messages claiming issues with Netflix account payments. Users get a push notification claiming that their Netflix payment failed and are urged to click on malicious links to “resolve” the problem. These messages include some links that lead to phishing websites that mimic Netflix’s official login page. Once users enter their credentials, scammers collect sensitive data, such as usernames, passwords, personal information, and credit card details.
Scammers also send some of these messages in local languages. Here are some examples of these messages:
“NETFLIX: There was an issue processing your payment. To keep your services active, please sign in and confirm your details at: https://account-details[.]com.”
“Your last payment was declined. Update your payment information at: https://homepage-nflix[.]com.”
The stolen information is then sold on the dark web and misused to con people for their money.
How to protect yourself from this scam?
- Avoid clicking on any random links. Go and verify your account through Netflix’s official website.
- Be wary of messages with urgent or alarming tones.
- Check if the message has come from an unfamiliar sender ID or if there are grammatical errors.
- Keep changing your passwords from time to time.
