Netflix may soon introduce a cheaper, mobile-only subscription plan. According to an Economic Times report, the media streaming giant is testing a mobile-only subscription plan with select users in the country, which is said to cost Rs 250 per month. This would mean that the new plan would cost half of what Netflix currently charges for its basic subscription plan. As per the report, the mobile-only plan allows subscribers to watch standard definition (SD) content on a single mobile or tablet screen at a time.

A spokesperson for Netflix told the publication, “We will be testing different options in select countries where members can watch Netflix on their mobile device for a lower price and subscribe in shorter increments of time. Not everyone will see these options and we may never roll out these specific plans beyond the tests.”

The new subscription plan is said to be an attempt to expand further in India. However, even at Rs 250 a month, it will be among the most expensive streaming services in the country. Amazon Prime Video costs Rs 129 a month, while Hotstar is available for Rs 199 a month. Others like AltBalaji and ZEE5 are even cheaper.

Netflix has also partnered with internet and telecom providers in order to make its services appeal to a wider audience. Earlier this month, the company partnered with ACT Fibernet. This allowed the internet providers’ 6-month and 12-month ‘Entertainment Plan’ customers to pay for their monthly Netflix Subscription and their ACT Fibernet bill. This allowed subscribers to receive a cashback of Rs 350 per month on their bills. Netflix has a partnership with Airtel as well. As part of their deal, Airtel postpaid and V-Fiber broadband customers can get a three-month subscription to Netflix for free.
