Apple may have purchased usage rights from UK-based Media Mushroom, and re-branded its existing app as Apple’s own.
Wednesday saw Apple making its debut on the Google Play Store with the Move to iOS app, that will ease migration from Android to iOS. However, it is now being reported that the app might not have been developed by Apple, and is in fact, a rehashed version of an existing app.
Phandroid has reportedly compared the source code of Move to iOS and Copy My Data, discovering that they share a majority of the code and functionality. Copy My Data is developed by a UK-based company, Media Mushrooms. It offers exactly the same features and can be found on the Play Store. Media Mushrooms also offers Device Switch on the iOS App Store, that allows users to move from iOS to Android devices. Although the package name shows up as “com.apple.movetoios”, the android:name field retains ”com.mediamushroom.copymydata”. Apparently, Apple didn’t bother to modify even a single instance of the com.mediamushroom.copymydata string. The only changes made were in replacing Media Mushroom’s UI with Apple’s, and adding a license agreement.
It is being speculated that Apple had bought the usage rights from Media Mushroom, according to what is advertised on its website. “We’re fast, creative and used to working with big corporations on tight deadlines. And if timings are really tight, we also have an extensive library of reusable white-label software to deliver great results. Fast.”
Apple released the Move to iOS app on Wednesday, coinciding with the launch of iOS 9. It allows users to transfer contacts, message history, camera photos and videos, web bookmarks, email accounts and free app. Since its launch, Move to iOS has been panned by Android fanboys, and currently has a rating of 1.7 out of 5. At the time of writing, there were over 14,000 1-star reviews. With this latest development, Apple has unwittingly subjected itself to further ridicule and backlash. It now looks like Apple Music is set to become Apple’s first original Android app, when it is launched later this year.
