Taking inspiration from Snapchat, Meta is testing a new feature called “Peek” for Instagram. This feature is expected to allow users to share unedited photos that disappear after one view. This move echoes Meta’s history of adapting trends from other platforms.

Let’s delve into the details.

Meta told TechCrunch that the Peek feature, first spotted by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, is currently in an early testing phase and not available to the public yet.

Unlike Instagram Stories, which last for 24 hours, Peek photos are expected to disappear after being viewed once. According to a screenshot shared by Paluzzi, users might only be able to capture photos in the moment using the camera and cannot upload them from their gallery.

Additionally, editing and applying filters will likely not be possible with Peek photos.

Peek seems to be a more fleeting and unfiltered way to share spontaneous moments on Instagram.

Instagram describes Peek as a tool for sharing “little moments with the people you love,” according to a screenshot by Paluzzi. This suggests Instagram intends to offer users a more personal way of connecting with close friends on the platform.

The public availability of Peek remains uncertain, as with any internal prototype. Even if Instagram decides to release it, the feature’s design or name could change before reaching users.

In my opinion, the Peek feature on Instagram could offer several benefits to users. Peek will likely encourage users to share unedited glimpses of their lives, fostering a more genuine connection compared to polished feed posts. Also, Peek could make direct messages more interactive and interesting. The disappearing aspect will likely add a layer of exclusivity to the shared content.
