In the bustling world of social media, where millions of posts flood our screens every day, getting noticed can feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack. For small accounts on Instagram, it’s an even tougher challenge. However, now, Instagram has announced major changes for its system that recommends content.
Let’s dive in and explore how Instagram is planning to give original content and smaller accounts a chance to shine like never before.

“Historically because of how we’ve ranked content, creators with large followings and aggregators of reposted content have gotten more reach in recommendations than smaller, original content creators. We think it’s important to correct this to give all creators a more equal chance of breaking through to new audiences,” Instagram said in a blogpost.

Instagram has introduced four changes: A new input to ranking that will give smaller creators more distribution, replacing reposts with original content in recommendations, adding labels to reposted content, and removing content aggregators from recommendations.
Now, let’s delve into the details of these changes.
Promoting small creators
Previously, popular accounts got the most attention on recommended content like Reels. Now, Instagram is changing things up. Instagram will show new content to small groups first, no matter the account’s size. If people like it, the platform will show it to more people. This way, everyone gets a fair shot at being seen. The company will roll this out over the coming months.
Replacing reposts with original content
If Instagram finds the same thing posted by different accounts, it’ll only show the original one in recommendations. This will only happen if the original is relatively new and the company is sure it’s the same thing. Instagram won’t replace it if the repost is changed a lot, like if it’s turned into a meme or a parody.
Labels to reposted content
If Instagram finds a piece of reposted content, it will add a label linking to the original creator, which will remain visible to followers of the account reposting it.
Removing aggregators from recommendations
To encourage original content, Instagram will also crack down on accounts that just repost stuff without adding anything new.
In the coming months, accounts that keep reposting content from others without doing much else (like making changes or adding value) will stop showing up in recommended places on Instagram. These accounts can become eligible for recommendations again after 30 days have passed since the last time they posted unoriginal content
This won’t affect accounts that have permission or agreements to repost content.
