Instagram is now testing a new feature known as Favourites, which lets you see posts from specific accounts at the top of your feed. This feature should help eliminate clutter from the feed by letting you access content from your favourite creators, before being subjected to random content from others.
As of now, there are no specific Instagram features (apart from the algorithm itself) that determine what posts appear on your feed first and what appear last. Typically, the algorithm chooses posts based on the types of content you have engaged with in the past, along with the types of creators you follow. The algorithm also shows promoted posts based on specific target audiences set by marketers. With the new Instagram feature, you should be able to bypass the algorithm to an extent and determine the kinds of content you want to see over others.
With the creator economy booming (and poised for further growth), this new Instagram feature should streamline content creation itself, with a stronger focus on value-based creation rather than a preference for regular posts. In other words, the Favourites feature should ensure that creators feature quality over quantity.
Having said that, audience interactions for trending content is proven to skyrocket, even for smaller creators. This performance is one that often opposes the value-creation argument by following a simpler philosophy – give the people what they want. Only time will tell whether the Favourites feature will truly impact content creation and distribution on the app.
