Meta-owned Instagram is reportedly working on a customisable “AI friend” feature. This feature is expected to allow users to create an AI friend, engaging in personalised conversations and interactions.

The screenshots of this feature were shared on X (formerly Twitter) by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi. According to the screenshots, the AI friend can “answer questions, talk through any challenges, brainstorm ideas and much more.”

As per the images of the feature, the personality options include: Reserved, Enthusiastic, Creative, Witty, Pragmatic and Empowering.

The feature is expected to even allow you to choose your AI friend’s interests. The options will likely include DIY, animals, career, education, and more.

After choosing your preferences, you would have the option to pick an avatar and assign a name to your AI friend. Following that, you might be directed to a chat window where you could initiate a conversation with the AI by clicking a button.

In our opinion, while the AI friend could help users to discuss challenges, and receive support in various aspects of their lives, it might also raise concerns. Over-reliance on AI friends for companionship and support could lead to reduced real-life social interactions, potentially impacting mental health and social well-being.

Recently, Instagram started testing a new feature that will allow users to turn their photos into custom stickers to use in their reels and stories. This feature will allow users to express themselves in a more creative and personalised way.
