Instagram has confirmed that it is beginning to roll out two-factor authentication for its users, according to a report by TechCrunch. This will allow Instagram users to verify a phone number. So the next time anyone tries to log into that account, the verified number will get an authentication code that needs to be entered in order to gain access. In the event hackers do manage to know a user’s email and password, the extra layer of security should be able to thwart them.
This move should be welcomed by most users, especially celebrities and brands. Hackers with access to an Instagram account can delete pictures, attack friends, or spam the account with e-commerce products or even scam offers. For celebrities, this may squander their chances of being promoted, while brands can lose their reputation with the public.
Earlier this month, Instagram rolled out the v7.15 update that finally added support for multiple account login and switching in iOS and Android. The update allowed users to add up to five accounts in one app. To add a new account, users will have go to ‘Settings’ and there they will see an option to add an account.
