Government warns about high-risk vulnerability in ChromeOS: What you should do to avoid it

CERT-In, which is an Indian government cybersecurity agency, has found certain vulnerabilities with the Google Chrome OS and has issued an update regarding the same. This poses security risks and potential fraud threats. It could even lead to unauthorised code execution and data breaches.

Mostly all of us use Google Chrome and if taken lightly, this vulnerability can impact a lot of people leading to hefty data theft. Considering the sensitivity of the issue, CERT-In has issued a high-severity warning in the same regard. Because of these bugs, attackers can easily execute arbitrary code on targeted systems.

What is its impact?

The advisory, which was issued on July 1, informs that these vulnerabilities particularly affect Chrome OS version 120.0.6099.315 (Platform Version: 15662.112). Using these bugs, attackers can lure users to websites that they have crafted to access user data. Eventually, this can lead to loss of personal data, compromised system integrity, and potential financial losses.

What you should do to avoid it?

To protect themselves from these vulnerabilities, users should update the version of Google Chrome running on their devices. Google has dealt with the same in its latest update, version 120.0.6099.315. It helps identify heap buffer overflow in WebRTC and the use-after-free issue in the Media Session.

How to update the Chrome version?

If you are using the above-mentioned Chrome version, then you should update this at the earliest, as I mentioned earlier. It is pretty simple and would hardly take any time.

Step 1: Open Chrome.
Step 2: Navigate to the three dots and click on “More”.
Step 3: Click on “Help” and then “About Google Chrome”.Step 4: If there’s an update available, then click on “Update Google Chrome”.
