Google’s Datally data-saving app gets Emergency Bank and Bedtime Mode features
HIGHLIGHTS

The Emergency Bank feature lets users save up data for emergency use, while Bedtime Mode turns off the phone’s data usage at night.

Google’s Datally app now has two new features to boast – Emergency Bank and Bedtime Mode. The Datally app allows Android users to track and optimise their data usage in real time, and get personalised tips on saving data along with notifications of public Wi-Fi spots available nearby. Google announced the two new modes through a blogpost on Thursday. With the new features, users will be able to piggybank some data for emergency use and turn it off completely while sleeping.

With the Emergency Bank feature, users will be able to enter their balance and how much data they would like to save for emergencies. The Datally app will then automatically block apps from using data once the allowance limit is reached. “You decide when and how to use your emergency bank data—for example, to send that urgent message or schedule a ride home,” Mengling Li, Software Engineer at Google’s Next Billion Users initiative wrote in the blogpost.

With Bedtime Mode, the Datally app will turn off data when a user is asleep and not using their Android phone. Users can choose their bedtime and wake up time, and the app will automatically shut-off data during that time. While the feature is useful for saving data that unnecessarily gets wasted by apps operating in the background during the night, it could make users miss out on important communications and messages thanks to the popularity of messaging apps over SMS. But that is a bargain one needs to make in order to save data.

“Datally’s mission is to help you never run out of data. You can use Emergency bank and Bedtime mode starting today,” Google noted.

Google launched the Datally app in 2017 as part of its Next Billion Users division. The app is designed for countries where data is expensive and its availability is limited because of cost. The app is globally available on the Google Play Store for all phones running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and higher. Back in June, the Datally app received a Guest Mode and a Wi-Fi Maps feature. The Guest Mode allows one to set a data limit before they hand out their device to someone else, while the Wi-Fi Maps feature shows nearby Wi-Fi's with good quality connection.
