Google has finally started showing addresses, phone numbers, and contacts as links on Gmail and the Inbox app. Clicking on an Address within an email will open Google Maps, while clicking on a phone number will launch the dialer.
Forget copy pasting. Google has finally embraced a much needed feature on Gmail and Inbox, something that the company should have done a long time ago. Gmail and the Inbox app will now present any addresses, contacts, or phone numbers as links within emails. The new feature will be reflected on both desktop and mobile versions of the email client.
Gmail users often exchange such information on emails and one usually has to copy paste it to make use of it. “Precious time can be lost by having to copy and paste this information from an email into other apps and websites, so we wanted to provide a better way to perform these tasks that also saves time. That’s why starting today, Gmail and Inbox by Gmail on Android, iOS, and the web will begin converting text to interactive hyperlinks whenever they detect phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses in emails,” writes Google in a blog post announcing the update.
Clicking an address inside Gmail or Inbox will redirect users to Google Maps, while clicking an email address will compose a new email in the default email client of the user. Similarly, tapping on a phone number while using a mobile device will bring up the dialer and start a call request.
Google is in the process of rolling out the update to both iOS and Android users worldwide. The company notes that the full rollout might take 1 to 3 days.
