Google has announced that it will discontinue the basic HTML view of Gmail next year. After this discontinuation, everyone who uses the basic HTML view will be switched to the Standard view.
“You can display Gmail on your browser in Basic HTML view until January 2024. After this date, Gmail automatically changes to Standard view,” the tech giant said in a support page.

According to The Verge, while most individuals opt for the Standard view on their PCs, the HTML version of Gmail comes with its own advantages. The stripped-down Gmail experience loads quickly and is accessible even on older computers or with slower internet connections.

When users are in Basic HTML view, they won’t find some Gmail features, such as chat, spell checker, keyboard shortcuts, adding or importing contacts, custom “from” addresses and rich formatting. To get these features, users have to switch to the Standard view in a browser that works with Gmail.
The discontinuation of Gmail’s basic HTML view is just the latest addition to Google’s ever-growing list of products, features, services, and more that have been admitted to the Google graveyard. The tech giant has also recently sunset its Pixel Pass phone upgrade program, Google Currents, and Nest Secure.
Last month, Google announced a native translation integration within the Gmail mobile app that enables users to seamlessly communicate in a wide range of languages. This highly requested feature helps users read and understand a conversation in any language. To translate messages on mobile, users just have to select ‘Translate’ on the dismissible banner and choose their preferred language.
