Google is reportedly planning to make Photos an independent service.
According to reports, Google is planning to separate Photos platform from its social networking service Google+. The Internet giant may rebrand the service and make it available to users without the requirement of a Google+ account.
Google+’s photo service has enhanced features and gives support for full-resolution backup of photos/videos. The app also comes with the ability to share user location and comes with features like lightbox for viewing photos, large image previews in the Google+ content feed and desktop click & drag for uploading photos. It has an instant upload feature that backup pictures taken with a mobile phone. Google also rolled out the auto-awesome feature in May, which allows users to combine photos and videos into a travelogue.
The internet giant has also created a separate Android app that comes with the Google+ app for now for the service. If the company makes Google+ Photos independent, it will be able to create a product that will be able to compete with Facebook owned Instagram. The mobile app, has over 200 million monthly active users who uploaded 60 million photos per day according to Facebook, while Google recently claimed that it has over 500 million Google+ users who uploaded more than 1.5 billion photos every week.
Google is planning to attract new users by making some of its social network's best features available to consumers who aren't interested in Google+. The internet giant has already made Hangouts available to users without the need for a Google+ account.
Google said in an e-mailed statement without commenting specifically on any plans for separating out the photo service, “Over here in our darkroom, we’re always developing new ways for people to snap, share and say cheese.”
