The feature allows Android users to backup their photos faster and in reduced resolution catering to poor and infrequent Wi-Fi connectivity.

Google is expanding the reach of the Express Backup feature on Google Photos to all Android users in India. The feature was first introduced in December last year and was available only to a small percentage of Android users in the country. Now, Google says that it has started rolling the image backup feature more widely in India and that by the end of the week, the feature should make it to all those Android users who have the updated Google Photos App.

The Express Backup feature on Google Photos caters to those who have poor and infrequent Wi-Fi connectivity. The feature ensures that images from the Google Photos app are backed up faster and in a reduced resolution for those who have selected the option. Before this feature, Google Photos used to offer two options to backup images – in Original quality and in High Quality.

"In India specifically, we heard from people using the app that their backup experience was at times longer and stalled because they might not always have frequent access to WiFi. In fact, we learned that over a third of people using Google Photos in India have some photos that hadn’t been backed up in over a month," Google said in its blogpost

The Express Backup feature can be enabled from the Backup settings in Google Photos. Users can also now setup a daily data limit for when they are uploading images using cellular data or opt for Wi-Fi backup only. The data cap options start from 5MB. The existing Original Quality and High Quality backup options will still be available and Android users can switch to those from Express Backup at any point in time.
