Google is reportedly working on an emoji reactions feature for Gmail. This feature is expected to allow Gmail users to use emojis for quick reactions to emails, extending the convenience of emoji use beyond mobile messaging.

From the strings found in the app, TheSpAndroid revealed how this feature is expected to work.

Once this feature is made available to users, they will likely notice a smiley icon located to the right of the email, just before the three-dot menu. By clicking on this icon, a tooltip is expected to appear with the text, “Respond quickly and add personality”.

Below this tooltip, an emoji reaction bar is expected to present, similar to the one found in Google Messages.

Within this feature, users will likely have the option to react using five pre-defined emojis, and they could also access a wider selection of emojis by clicking the “+” button. According to the report, there are three locations from where users can react to an email: the emoji button located just before the three-dot menu, the “Add reaction” option found within the three-dot menu itself, and an emoji button positioned on the right side of the reply, reply all and forward buttons at the bottom of the email screen.

When someone reacts to an email using Gmail on Android or iOS, and the recipient is also using the official Gmail app on these platforms, they are expected to see the reactions displayed at the bottom of the email thread. However, if the recipient is using a different email client or service, they will likely receive the reaction as a separate email with ” (emoji) (name) reacted via Gmail on (date)”.

As for emoji support on the web version of Gmail, while specific details are not provided, it’s likely that Google will eventually introduce this feature to maintain a consistent user experience and prevent users of the web version from receiving separate emails for emoji reactions, which could potentially clutter their inboxes.
