Google has announced that it is rolling out an updated emoji picker on the web version of its email service Gmail. The modernised emoji picker will allow users to express themselves more authentically using emoji variations in Gmail.

“Starting today, you can access a more complete emoji selection and set emoji skin tone and gender preferences with the modernised emoji picker in the web version of Gmail,” the tech giant announced in a Workspace Updates blogpost on October 25.

The new emoji picker will allow users to express themselves more authentically using emoji variations in Gmail. This feature will be ON by default and cannot be disabled by the user.

How to select emoji preference in Gmail on web

Step 1: Click the emoji icon in the bottom toolbar of your email draft.

Step 2: Select the arrow in the bottom right corner of an emoji.

Step 3: Now, choose your skin tone or gender preference for that specific emoji. These individual selections will be saved until you update them.

If you haven’t received the updated emoji picker yet, just wait a little while as it is currently rolling out to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts.

In our opinion, the modernised emoji picker in Gmail will enhance the email experience by making it more diverse and expressive, ensuring that users can communicate with a wider range of emojis that better reflect their individual preferences and identities.

Recently, Google announced emoji reactions in Gmail. With emoji reactions in Gmail, users can get even quicker and more creative with their responses. The feature comes with some limitations. You can’t react to an email if you have a work or school account, the message is sent to a group email list or to more than 20 recipients, you’re in BCC, you’ve already sent more than 20 reactions to the same message, you open the email in another email provider (like Apple Mail or Microsoft Outlook), a message is encrypted with Client-side encryption, or the sender has a custom reply-to address.
