HIGHLIGHTS

Facebook Moments is a new photo sharing app which uses facial recognition to tag your friends.

Facebook has revealed its new Moments app that will privately upload your photos to the cloud and suggest tags for your friends based on facial recognition with the help of Facebook’s face recognition technology. This allows the user to simply tag people in the pictures. Once the pictures are tagged, they will be available for sync or to share with the tagged people. You can privately share your pictures with friends via Facebook, Instagram or directly via Messenger as well. You can also change these tagging and sharing setting from the settings menu of the app.

The Moments app groups your photos based on when they were taken, using facial recognition technology. Facebook says this way “When you go to a wedding, for example, there are many people taking great photos throughout the day. You all want a quick way to share your photos with the friends who are in them, and get photos that you’re in back.” All these photos will be organised by event accordingly in the cloud with yours and your friends' pictures showing up in the same album.

However, Facebook hasn't revealed how many photos can be synced to the cloud or what’s the storage limit. It is also not clear how secure all these pictures will be once they uploaded or if the quality is being decreased . And while Google Photos lets you share privately selected photos via link to almost anywhere, the sharing capabilities of the Moments app sound very limited. The app is available for download on iTunes and Google Play Store.
