Facebook Messenger updated with dark mode option.

The new colour scheme can be accessed in settings after updating the app.

One could enable dark mode on Facebook Messenger by sending a moon emoji to anyone they are chatting with. Now, the app is being updated so that users don't need to moon anyone and can toggle the dark mode directly from settings. The latest update for Messenger app on Android and iOS adds the new feature permanently to the app, which can be accessed from settings. The new colour scheme for the app is being rolled out globally. Facebook isn’t the only company that’s adopting a darker colour scheme for its app. Upcoming major version updates of Android and iOS are reported to leverage the dark mode for making the OS’ easier on the eyes and saving battery on OLED equipped phones.

Alongside Messenger, Facebook-owned WhatsApp is also testing dark mode feature in beta. As per a previous report, the company is testing the dark colour scheme on the online messaging app with the WhatsApp beta version 2.19.82. Whereas the same feature was spotted on WhatsApp beta version 2.18.100 for iOS, suggesting that the company could soon release an update for the app that brings dark mode for standard users.

As mentioned earlier, Google is also said to be working on implementing dark mode in Android Q. The upcoming major Android OS is said to bring system-wide implementation of dark mode. The beta for Android Q is officially out and first reports suggest that some apps like Google Drive automatically feature dark mode when the system is set to the same colour scheme. The report showcased the Google Drive app on Android with dark mode colour scheme and we can expect other Google apps to feature inbuilt dark mode like Phone, Contacts, Messages, Chrome, Play Games, News, and YouTube in the future. It’s possible that all of these apps will get an app-specific dark mode toggle when Android Q rolls out.
