After Poke, Slingshot is the social media giant's latest attempt to take on Snapchat.
Facebook accidentally released Snapchat-competitor Slingshot for iOS, but soon withdrew it from the app store, stating the “app will be will ready soon”.
"Earlier today, we accidentally released a version of Slingshot, a new app we're working on. With Slingshot, you'll be able to share everyday moments with lots of people at once. It'll be ready soon and we're excited for you to try it out,” The Verge quotes Facebook as saying.
Even though Facebook has withdrawn the app, details and screenshots are still available online. The Slingshot app, considered to be the replacement of the recently killed Poke app, allows users quickly send photos and videos to friends. The interface of the app is said to have a minimalistic design. Like Snapchat, the Slingshot will allow users to add caption and draw on photos and video messages.
According to reports, the Slingshot app resembles newly launched app called Taptalk, rumoured to be popular among Facebook engineers who were working on a similar version. The app also mimics the “slinging” moniker popularised by an app called Rando, which was shut down earlier this month.
