Elon Musk-owned micro-blogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has announced that it has started allowing people from India to join its crowd-sourced fact-checking programme Community Notes. The company stated that the first contributors of the Community Notes in India are joining today.
“Welcome new contributors in India,” the company said in an X post. “Our first contributors are joining today, and we’ll be expanding over time. As always, we’ll monitor quality to ensure that notes are found helpful by people from different points of view.”

Let’s delve into the details of what exactly is the Community Notes programme.
Community Notes is a collaborative way to keep people better informed. According to the company, Community Notes aim to create a better informed platform by empowering people on X to collaboratively add context to potentially misleading posts.
Contributors can leave notes on any post and if enough contributors from different points of view rate that note as helpful, the note will be publicly shown on a post.

It’s important to note that Community Notes do not represent X’s viewpoint and cannot be edited or modified by the company. A post with a Community Note will not be labelled, removed, or addressed by X unless it is found to be violating the X Rules, Terms of Service, or the company’s Privacy Policy.
This is an open and transparent process, that’s why the company has made the Community Notes algorithm open source and publicly available on GitHub, along with the data that powers it so anyone can audit, analyse or suggest improvements.
