YouTube is adding a variety of features to enhance the user experience. In the latest update, the Google-owned video streaming platform is now working on a new feature for users who are confused about what they want to watch. Known as the “Play Something” floating action button (FAB), the feature will solve the problem by playing random videos. For those unfamiliar, the feature has been under testing for over a year and is currently available to Android users with version 19.5.
Speaking of the usage, the “Play Something” button available above the home tab with the black background will help the users to straight dive into the content without having to scroll search or find something. After tapping on the button, the feature will start playing a video directly in the Shorts player. It is worth noting that the feature is not limited to Shorts. It can also play regular videos in portrait form.

The video controls are simplified with large buttons for liking, disliking, commenting, and sharing positioned on the right while the timeline scrubber is displayed at the bottom. The users should also know that the Play Something button disappears from the screen if the multiplayer is active.
With this new feature, the platform aims to simplify the user experience and encourage more spontaneous content consumption. The feature will automatically show the relevant content based on past viewing without the users actually needing to search.
After months of testing, the Play Something feature is available with a wider audience and is expected to roll out to the public in the coming months.
Meanwhile, the company has rolled out new features in the previous weeks including a new vertical scroll gesture, AI-powered auto-dubbing feature, and much more. As per the reports more features are in pipeline and will be rolled out gradually.
