Scammers are now using a new trick that they are calling a “super realistic AI scam call.” This can even fool people who are tech-savvy, as one such case involves Sam Mitrovic, founder of CloudJoy, who shared his experience in a recent blog post. Sam received an email that claimed to be a Gmail account recovery notification. A few minutes later, he got a phone call from a number that claimed to be from “Google Sydney.” Then a week later, the same thing happened, but this time the call came from a legitimate number listed on Google’s support page. The caller said his account had been accessed from overseas and that personal data was stolen.
Mitrovic then began investigating as he suspected something wasn’t right, and later, he confirmed through Reddit forums that it was a spoofing attempt to take over his Gmail account. Scammers even used AI for a legitimate-sounding AI voice bot and a fake email with a Google domain and a phone number that matched Google Workspace support.
Unfortunately, experts haven’t found a counter to stop these scams yet. However, here are a few tips that might save you from this spoofing cybercrime.
- Google doesn’t call about Gmail accounts much unless it’s linked to a Google Business Profile. Usually, Google emails first using a Google domain.
- Moreover, if you have a business profile and you get a suspicious call, always double-check the number through platforms like Truecaller.
- One last thing that you can also do is keeping an eye on your Gmail activity from “My Activity” in Settings.
Apart from this, you should also change your passwords frequently and use two-factor authentication. This will add an extra layer of security to your accounts. In this digital age, where data is highly valuable, hackers will keep creating smarter ways to steal information. The best defense is staying cautious and keeping your accounts secure.
