Smart assistants have become a part of the daily lives of many people across the globe. In India as well, we have seen a rise in the number of people flocking towards the smart assistant trend. People have found their own comfort zone in a world that is fuelled by these digital assistants. This growth in the popularity of smart assistants in demand was showcased in the data released by Amazon on the sixth anniversary of their smart assistant, Amazon Alexa, in India.
As Amazon Alexa gains popularity, is India headed towards a smart home revolution?
The numbers released by Amazon showed a 200% increase in smart home devices connected to Alexa in the last three years. While the data is specific to one assistant, which comes packed in smart speakers from Amazon and is available as an add-on for Android devices, the insights that we get from this revelation give us an indication that Indian households are getting smarter by the day.
Not only this, but Amazon, in their release, revealed that the popularity of Alexa was not limited to only the urban spaces in the country. The release mentioned that – “Devices with Alexa (ex. Echo smart speakers or Fire TV Stick) have been purchased by customers from across 99% pin codes in India – they equally reside in metro and non-metro cities.”

At the time of their introduction in India, smart assistants were limited to being able to execute commands on people’s phones or the devices that they had been integrated into. However, over time, their capabilities have seen an astronomical rise. And, to add to it, people are making use of it. The numbers are suggestive of this. In the last three years, there has been a 100 per cent increase in the number of commands given to Amazon Alexa to control compatible smart home appliances.
As I previously mentioned, while this data is limited to just one assistant, it is definitely indicative of the rise in the popularity of smart home appliances and smart assistants in general. With the increase in the capabilities of consumer electronics to work with AI-enabled systems and their increased ease of use, I see these numbers going nowhere but up. The adoption of technology in India is on the rise, and not limited to urban spaces, which is something that we have not experienced before. With this progress, it would be really interesting to see where we are on the global map of consumer electronics development, manufacturing, and consumption.
