HIGHLIGHTS

iOS users downloaded nearly three million apps last month, which Apple brands as the most successful month in App Store history.

iOS users spent over $10 billion on the App Store in 2013, including more than $1 billion in December alone. More than 3 billion apps were downloaded in December 2013, which Apple claims is the most successful month in the App Store history. Apple further reveals its developers have so far earned made $15 billion on the App Store.

Apple in a release pointed out a number of popular and emerging apps and developers took advantage of the new iOS 7 platform, which was released in September. “We’d like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store,” says Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “The lineup of apps for the holiday season was astonishing and we look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014.”

Apple mentions Ellen DeGeneres’ Heads Up, ProtoGeo’s Moves, Simon Filip’s Afterlight and Kevin Ng’s Impossible Road among the surprise hits of the year. Candy Crush Saga, Puzzles & Dragons, Minecraft, QuizUp and Clumsy Ninja were also popular.

Apple almost a year ago announced its App Store had gone past 40 billion downloads, with over half of that made in 2012. It also revealed December 2012 saw over 2 billion downloads as well as 500 million user accounts registered. In May 2013, Apple confirmed surpassed 50 million apps downloads.

Apple’s sales figures from the App Store come months after App Annie, a site that deals with app analytics, claimed that second quarter of 2013 saw 10% more apps downloaded for Android devices than iOS ones but the latter garnering almost two and half times the revenue from app sales as compared to the former.
